Dear CTH Colleagues,

See below.  2007 will be huge.  In fact, please print this newsletter out (in color if you can) and read about these six upcoming cool events.  Any of them could headline a newsletter issue.

Most personally meaningful?  We began MentorCoach nine years ago with 20 brave souls in MCP 1 (our very first cohort of MentorCoach Program (MCP) students).  We are about to begin MCP 100 -- our Centennial Class.  It's been a great nine years.

Until next year,

Ben

1.  North of Neutral: A Positive Psychology Master Class with Chris Peterson, Ph.D.

8 Tuesdays at 12:00 Noon Eastern (5:00 pm UTC/GMT) starting 1/23/07.  Class size will be capped-enrollment is on a first-come, first served basis.

At long last, Chris Peterson, Ph.D. will teach his own positive psychology class: North of Neutral! This course will cover the heart of positive psychology, including its applications and interventions, through lectures, readings, and out-of-class exercises. The class will include both bright professionals who are relatively new to the field and those who have a deeper understanding.

It will reflect Chris' unique vantage point gained from both years of experience, research, writing, teaching, and his constant communication with the world's leading researchers in this field.

The class will also reflect the state-of-the-art in theory and research circa 2007. It will be based on the rich, deep river of knowledge in Chris' new textbook, A Primer in Positive Psychology. And it will be based whenever possible on the latest unpublished research in the field as well.

For complete details and course syllabus of Chris' course, click hereFor the CTH Newsletter on Ben's Top Ten Reasons to love A Primer in Positive Psychology, click here.

3.  March, 2007 Interview with Bill George, Former CEO: Medtronic

Many in our 131,000-person Coaching Toward Happiness community are passionate about executive coaching.  We long to support leaders who are changing the world.  But what are leaders at the very highest levels like?  And are there great leaders whose approach is consistent with positive psychology?  Are there even some who talk of "loving" their employees?

In March, 2007, we'll begin to find out.  We will be interviewing Bill George, former CEO of Medtronic and co-author with Peter Sims of "True North: Discover Your Authentic Leadership," scheduled for a Spring release.

Bill George is a Professor of Management Practice at Harvard Business School, where he is teaching leadership and leadership development.

He is the former Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Medtronic. Under his leadership in the 11 years from 1991 to 2002, Medtronic's market capitalization grew from $1.1 billion to $60 billion, averaging 35% a year.

He now serves as a director of Goldman Sachs, Novartis, Exxon Mobil, and the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.  He is Chairman of the Global Center for Leadership and Business Ethics.

He is among the very most respected CEOs in America.  For example, he was named Executive-of-the-Year by the Academy of Management (2001) and Director-of-the-Year by NACD (2001-02).  In 2002 he was selected as one of "The 25 Most Influential Business People of the Last 25 Years" by PBS Nightly News.

I met Bill and his co-author, Peter Sims at a Gallup Leadership Conference here in Washington, DC.  He was on a plenary-session, star-panel of four CEOs recognized for their positive, value-driven approaches to leadership and to the positive growth of major organizations.  It was an extraordinary discussion, followed by a smaller presentation.  Peter gave me a copy of the galleys of True North.  I've found it to be a powerful, inspiring book based on personal interviews with 125 CEOs and business leaders known for their integrity and leadership.  I will review it when it is released.  I am virtually certain it will be a major business best seller.

Interview details and dates to come.

The conference theme is "People at their Best: Work, Education and Health."  We will describe this conference in more detail in our future newsletters and will interview P.
